What are phishing sites and how do these work?
Phishing sites are part of large, organised crime efforts that aim to defraud individuals of their identity and assets. All financial institutions are targets for these phishing attacks.
False websites, with very similar URLs, are set up as copycats of genuine website which are then promoted through Google Ads campaigns. The URLs will generally only have one letter different so if the user is working quickly, it can be hard to spot the difference.
An example of an URL that has been used is https://btcmarketes.net/ , notice the extra “e” after the “t”. This URL was then promoted through the following Google Ad.
When a user clicks on this ad they are diverted to a landing page that looks very similar to the BTC Markets login page. The hackers then use this page to steal customer usernames, passwords and multi factor authentication codes. They will then, very rapidly, use them to access the customer’s account.
How can you tell if the Site is fake or real?
There are a number of ways to check if the website is fake:
- Make sure the spelling of https://auth.btcmarkets.net in your web browser's address bar is correct.
- There should also be an icon that depicts a closed padlock, this indicates that you are on a website with a secure certificate.
Also never click on a Google Ad to access our website. At the time of writing, cryptocurrency exchanges are not allowed to advertise on Google in Australia so it will not be us running those ads.
